KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 1 — Dr Juanda Jaya criticised today the alleged police assault on student protesters in Tanjung Malim, pointing out that this will only increase public anger towards the authorities.

“The assault on students at UPSI (Sultan Idris University of Education) is very bewildering,” the Perlis Mufti (picture) said in a statement.

“Why spill each other’s blood (in an act) forbidden by religion? Is the door to dialogue closed?”

Dr Juanda stressed that anger could not be resolved by stirring up more anger and urged students and police to respect the boundaries of each other’s right to act.

The authorities should exercise greater wisdom and not resort so readily to a show of force, he added.

“Yes, you have power, but let the people respect and appreciate your power, not stoke (more anger) with hate.”

The police have come under fire from opposition parties and civil liberties groups for allegedly using excessive force to break up a demonstration for academic freedom at UPSI in Tanjung Malim, Perak.

About 60 undergraduate protesters took part in the midnight sit-down to protest against the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA).

The students, who came from various public universities, claimed they were beaten, punched and kicked by both uniformed and plainclothes policemen after refusing to disperse as instructed.

One protester, Muhammad Safwan Anang, president of Gerakan Menuntut Kebebasan Akademic (Bebas), was later warded at the Slim River Hospital after losing consciousness.

He is believed to have also lost a few teeth and suffered fractured bones in the 2.30am incident.

Police have denied beating up students and downplayed the incident, pointing out that “scuffles can happen ... in the heat of the moment”.
